Pens of the Earth

Pens of the Earth is a Portsmouth-based literary initiative that empowers writers to engage with environmental issues through storytelling, poetry, and creative expression. Launched by the Portsmouth Writers’ Hub in collaboration with local environmentalists, the spoken word troupe T’Articulation, and media partners like Star & Crescent, the project invites writers to celebrate existing ecological efforts and envision sustainable futures.

The initiative offers a platform for writers to contribute positive environmental narratives, drawing inspiration from local movements such as Wilder Portsmouth, Streets for People, and Plastic Free Portsmouth. Through events, workshops, performances, and publication opportunities, Pens of the Earth encourages the use of creative skills to raise awareness and inspire action against climate change.

A significant milestone for the group was the publication of Wild Seas, Wilder Cities, a collection of stories, poems, memoirs, and illustrations inspired by environmental initiatives in Portsmouth and beyond. All proceeds from the book support the Solent Seagrass Restoration Project, reflecting the group's commitment to tangible ecological impact.

Pens of the Earth continues to foster a community where literature and environmentalism intersect, offering resources and inspiration for writers to contribute to the global conversation on sustainability.

T’Articulation

T’Articulation is a vibrant spoken word collective based in Portsmouth, UK, dedicated to promoting original poetry, prose, and performance art across the city. Founded in 2018 by writers and performers including Christine Lawrence, Amanda Garrie, Richard Peirce, and Jackie Green, the group evolved from earlier events like Premature Articulation and St Valentine’s Day Massacre, originally initiated by novelist William Sutton .

With a membership of around 50 creatives, T’Articulation hosts themed events that encourage both seasoned and emerging writers to craft new material for live performance. Their gatherings often feature a mix of scheduled performances and open mic slots, fostering an inclusive environment for literary expression .

Beyond performances, T’Articulation is committed to community engagement. They collaborate with local organizations, such as Portsmouth City Council Libraries and the University of Portsmouth, to offer workshops and events that empower underrepresented voices. Initiatives like the "Your Voice Matters" program aim to encourage individuals to share their stories through writing and performance .
